District Concert Monday May 7th at FHS 7:00pm

The 4-12 District Orchestra Festival will be on Monday, May 7, 2018 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Lowell Nomeland Gymnasium in the High School.  Your child will play in a grade level orchestra in addition to the large group (about 220 students)!  All students will need to be at the high school at 6:30 p.m. for tuning and warm-ups.  Concert attire is nice dress clothes (skirts/skorts or dresses for girls and nice slacks for boys).

 We will practice at the high school during the day of May 7th at the High School.  I will need about 9 parents to help chaperone from approximately 8:15 until 10:45 a.m.  If you are available to help, please contact me by email.  Chaperones will meet students at their schools, make sure everyone gets on the bus, ride with them to the high school, and basically just keep track of everyone in their group.  They will be rehearsing most of the time.

All students will need the following for the morning rehearsal:

            1.  Instruments – INCLUDING CELLOS AND BASSES from home.

They can be taken over on the bus or to FHS gymnasium before school starts, as early as 6:00am.

    2. Music
    3. Homework to do while other students practice.

The String Orchestra Instrument Choices (Description)

 Violin—Unaltered for centuries, the violin is perhaps the most widely recognized orchestral instrument. Whether you call it a violin or a fiddle, it is the string family’s highest voice. High pitched, beautifully toned, the violin is often used as a lead or solo instrument, particularly in music demanding fast passage work.

 Viola—played under the chin much in the same manner as the violin, the viola is slightly larger and tuned differently. A larger tone chamber endows the viola with its mellow qualities and enables it to produce somber, moody tones.

  Cello—officially known as the violoncello, the cello produces deep lower registers and subdued higher tones. Unlike the violin or the viola, the cello is supported on the floor by an endpin while the seated performer steadies the instrument with his or her knees.

 String Bass—The string family’s largest instrument, the string or double bass may be played with the bow or plucked by hand. The bass is the deepest voice of the string family and can function as a rhythmic accompaniment or as a solo instrument. The deep response of the bass gives foundation and “bottom” to the orchestra. 


Beginning Orchestra - No experience necessary!

             Pencil - ALWAYS keep one in your case                     

                   Soft cloth for cleaning instrument

                   Rock stop/endpin holder for cellos/basses

   3 ring binder or folder to hold music and book

 Learning to play an instrument and belonging to the school orchestra is a wonderful opportunity! Students learn self-discipline, group cooperation, problem solving, goal setting, self expression, memory skills, concentration, poise, enhanced physical coordination, high self-esteem, and the importance of team work – skills in great demand for almost every aspect of life.
